The Zoom H1 was taken using a softbox positioned above and behind like a strong hair light. The front light was a shoot through umbrella and place directly in front. The horizon where the glass ended and the background began had to fixed/healed in Photoshop.

Apart from that, it is naturally graduated by the back light which was on an angle and by the curve of the background.

Is there any better way to show off the colours of the Rubik’s Cube than High Key?

Here is my latest instalment in the still life series, my much used dice. Board games just wouldn’t be the same without them.

Following on from Friday’s teapot, here is my pepper mill. Tomorrow who knows, I may push the boat out and alter the lighting!

Say hello to my, Teapot. It is no antique, nor is it a family heirloom, it is just our family teapot bought from Asda for a whole £6. So why I am taking a picture of this?

Well, with the kids getting a bit camera shy, and me being indoors (far to much for my liking)  I have not been taking enough pictures. So ideas were needed to allow me to practice photography everyday, no matter what the weather. The only place that could happen is in my own house, so I have decided to work on my still life/product shot skills.

By doing this I have set myself a goal that is easy to achieve, but still requires my full attention. Perhaps the best part about the goal is that it is really hard to wriggle out of. I have no models to rely on, bad weather is locked outside, and the light is provided by a flash most of the time.

So product shots of items that are in easy reach and don’t require any bribery to pose is the way forward. There is also an added bonus, my lighting skills will improve and that can only improve any future portrait work.
